I knitted a TARDIS from
It was a birthday gift or

I put it on a cardboard box that I made and stuffed, leaving the top open so the fabric would stretch into a kind of peak. I made the box too big so the fabric distorted. I wasn't happy with it but

Close-up:

While I was halfway through sewing the pieces together, my friend decided to try it on:

OK, the fingerless gloves. Basically I adapted the plushy TARDIS pattern on the fly, so I don't have it all written down. If there's any interest I'll put something together to post, but if you're a reasonably confident knitter it's not hard at all. You just knit however much you want for the cuff in K1 P1, and then switch to regular stitch and put in dark blue panels as in the original pattern. Make them as long as you can fit, depending on the size of the hands you're making them for. Leaving enough room for the 'Police Box' text.
The hands I was making them for are small, so for average sized hands you might just put some more plain blue stitches around the design.
(ETA: these were also a gift. Maybe I'll make some for myself next. *g*)
The pieces before I stitched them up:

And finished:

I cast off a little too loosely, so instead of sitting snugly the ends near the fingers curled a bit. I stitched through a piece of blue yarn and pulled it tight to combat this, but if you cast off reasonably firmly you shouldn't have that problem.

Actually they were a gift as well. But I do kind of want some for myself! Maybe next winter. It's summer here now.

So I knitted one side of the TARDIS plushy and was aghast at how gigantic it was. I was going for small, like in the pictures. I'm turning it into a scarf (with just the blue panels in the middle and one complete TARDIS at each end) and getting thinner yarn and smaller needles to do the plushy. Now that I see the one you made, though...

I like the gloves. Longer arm warmers would be fun too.
Properly modified the Plushy Tardis would make a good lapghan as well.
December 18 2008, 00:16:31 UTC 3 years ago
It would make a great lapghan, but man would it take forever! I don't have the patience for big projects like that.

These are so beautiful! I'm definitely going to try it when i finish the other things I have to knit for people...

And yeah, the temptation to make TARDIS everything is strong, I know!

I seriously had no idea how big that TARDIS would be when knitted up. It appears to be to-scale with EXTERMIKNIT!, though, which amuses me far more than it should.
I WANT the hand-warmers. So cool!
December 18 2008, 00:23:49 UTC 3 years ago
Yeah I was pretty surprised when I saw how big it was going to be too.
EXTERMIKNIT?

And I'm definitely going to beg her to knit me a TARDIS *wheeee* :P
p.s. hi from a fellow kiwi ;)

I'll see what I can do about writing a pattern. I've never done it before so I'm unsure of the format.
Are you still living in NZ? Cos that would give me some time until it's cold enough to wear gloves again!

That's cause it IS PERFECT! I get comments on it once a week or so from people wandering in and seeing it at my desk. (And I still cuddle it when no-one is looking!)
