Beware the Weeping Angels
Y'all might have noticed that your friendly community moderator has been slacking a bit lately. No updates. No organizing. What the heck was she doing that kept her so busy elsewhere?!

Absolutely MASSIVE amounts of pictures under the cut, sorryCollapse )

This is the 'making-of' post - if you want to read the 'in-costume' post, it's over here on dw_cosplay.

A few quick questions

About the gloves...

1) Do you sew the fingers before or after you cut them?
2) I'm assuming you sewed the gloves by hand? I'm not sure how to make a machine to whipstitch, nor am I sure that I'd trust the stretchy tights material in the machine.
3) In the one picture it looks like you've got a seam going down your arm... did you fit the tights (and hence sew the seam) all down the arm or just for that spot at the wrist as you mentioned?

They look totally great, btw-- and I'd really be interested in seeing how well they could work instead of body paint, eg, for a costume like Chiana or Zhaan from Farscape.

Second question re: masks-- Did you experiment at all with attaching the mask to the head-sleeve? I imagine though that might make it harder to lift up and breathe from.

I sewed the fingers after I cut them. I used the pins to mark where I wanted them cut, then cut along the pins to make the separate fingers. Then I carefully trimmed the stocking's original seam off the tips of the fingers, shortened the thumb, and rounded the tips of the fingers. After that it's really easy to just hold the edges of the seam together and whip-stitch it.

I whip-stitched it by hand. I used the tiniest seam-allowances possible - something like 1/16 inch, probably. I don't think a machine would work very well here. I put the stitches as close together as possible, so overall it took me about three evenings to sew the gloves.

The seam you see is the tuck I took at the wrist - it wanted to bag and wrinkle there, so some of the fabric had to go. I whipstitched there, too (since that's the only stretchy hand-stitch I know).

I had initially considered experimenting with attaching the mask to the stocking, but ran out of time. I'm so glad I did! Being able to lift the mask and breathe is nice, but being able to lift it to drink was vital. If I hadn't been able to constantly drink water, I would probably have passed out within the first hour.

Found through dressdiaries - fantastic, fantastic work!

You ARE going to CostumeCon next year, yes?

Thank you!

I can only really afford one convention a year, unfortunately. :( Maybe one of these years I will make it to CostumeCon. I'd love to go there - even if I'd probably get kicked out as soon as someone saw my internal seams. ;)

Not a cosplayer, or even a convention attender, but have seen a few costumes even so, and this is amazing. That's a wonderful job. I hope you got to enter a contest, as I think you should have won pretty much any of them. Amazing attention to detail.

My first thought after seeing the first two pictures was that you'd made a statue of the angel. I thought it was an excellent job just for that, except I couldn't figure out why you would have left the face unsculpted after goping to so much trouble on the rest of it.

I didn't realize it was a cosplay post until I started reading.
Just awesome. Congrats!

Are you going to Gallifrey One in February?

I was thinking of doing a weeping angel myself. . . And I'm bringing my own TARDIS. . .

I wish... *sigh* At this point in my life, I'm lucky to be able to one convention a year. But I hope you do decide to do the weeping angel - we need some representation there! :)

I'll let you know that you scared the freaking hell outta me Saturday. I stepped off the elevator and came around by the front desk and stopped. I practically dragged my husband past and out the door while he laughed at me. Didn't get to see the masks at the time, though.

If you saw it, the Angel in the ConSuite was mine.

Wow, that was you?! I had no idea. When I was talking to Lesa (I think) about the costumes we had seen, I gushed over this one, but I had no idea it was you. Fantastic job!
